November is National Lung Cancer Awareness Month and we are grateful to have a chance to shine a light on this serious health issue impacting millions globally. You can play a part in shining a needed light on lung cancer to raise awareness and educate others.
Prevalence of Lung Cancer
Cancer is responsible for the deaths of 9.6 million people in 2018. Lung cancer is at the forefront, with 2.9 million cases and 1.76 million deaths in the same year. This makes lung cancer the leading cause of death in terms of cancer. The two types of lung cancer are non-small cell and small cell.
Until a cure is found, there will always need to be funding to exterminate all forms of cancer. Oddly, even though lung cancer contributes the most to cancer deaths, it receives smaller recognition and funding than others. This hinders the ability to make strides for prevention and a cure. This is partially due to the common misconceptions perpetuated. Some of those misconceptions are:
People bring it on themselves: Twenty-five percent of lung cancer patients have never smoked, but even if they had, they still deserve healing.
There’s no way to screen it: You can screen early with a CT scan that is low-dose.
It only happens in older adults: While the average age of a lung cancer diagnosis is 70, there are diagnoses made with young adults.
Early detection is so important for conquering lung cancer. Here are some of the signs you should look out for.
- Chest pain that worsens when coughing
- Coughing up blood
- Loss of appetite
- Unexplainable weight loss
- Unexplainable tiredness or weakness
- Shortness of breath
There are different forms of lung cancer, but all of these can be an early sign. Be sure to speak to your doctor if one or more of these are applicable to you. Early detection means early action. Some symptoms of advanced lung cancer are: jaundice, bone pain, lumps in the neck or collarbone and dizziness.
Now that you know the signs and symptoms of lung cancer, you’ll know what to look for if things are seeming off. If you have questions, reach out to PulseAir for help!
